NFL Logo Elements Collection by New Era

It’s rare that something truly revolutionary comes along. The release of the New Era NFL LOGO ELEMENTS collection is one of those moments.  This collection is unlike any other before – stripping down all 32 NFL logos to their most recognizable and basic forms.  Creating something familiar and yet totally original at the same time.

The uniqueness of this collection warranted a deeper dive into the creation of these designs, so we went directly to the source, New Era Senior Designer, Bill Hodge, to learn of his inspiration in developing this new line of caps.

NEW ERA NFL LOGO ELEMENTS COLLECTION

1. What was the inspiration for the NFL LOGO Elements Collection?

This was originally a 2018 NFL draft concept, and the inspiration was to break down each logo. The idea was to simplify, but still make it recognizable to each NFL team. A group of designers and directors worked on the project. It was more of a collaborative effort. With many rounds of revisions and changes.

2. Has anything like this ever been done before with NFL logos?

I don’t think anything like this was ever done where we took elements of the logo out to create something new. We have done programs like the “Trace,” which was taking the logo outlines and punching out the fill to almost recreate a neon look. New Era has also taken parts of each team’s official word mark and combined the primary logo. I believe the program was called the “Deceptor.” These designs were done years ago across a few of our licensed partners.

3. What were the hardest logo(s) to adapt to this LOGO Elements style?

We went through at least five concept reviews internally with a group of people from New Era first. Then we had to submit all the teams to the league. There were dozens of changes that had to happen. It was a long process that took months to finally get approved. Some logos were definitely easier than others for sure. The most challenging teams to work on were the Bills, Bears, Browns, Broncos, Colts, and Raiders. We had multiple options for all the NFL teams, we pushed for the best design, but it wasn’t always in our hands. Just part of the design process.

4. Do you have any personal favorite designs in this collection?

Some of my favorite teams are the Steelers, Bucs, Titans, Pats, and Giants. These teams to me stand out and best define the concept.

5. What does it feel like to see people in the street walking around in your creations?

There definitely is a sense of pride. At New Era, it takes a team of people to make this product come to life. So it’s not just me that should be proud, everyone that had a hand at the product should be proud. It all starts with an idea and so many people make it come to life. I always hope people will like what we do here at New Era.

6. Do you have any ideas for future versions of Logo Elements?

We are always trying to push the envelope. We might take this idea further, just not sure. Some teams might adopt a secondary logo from the group, but who knows. This is just one project of many where we are always looking to inspire people with new designs.
